SEATTLE — A new documentary is honoring the life and legacy of NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens, with a focus that goes beyond his accomplishments on the court.
The film is titled “Cornerstone: The Lenny Wilkens” story.
KOMO News Anchor Holly Menino spoke with with Randy Wilkens, Lenny Wilkens’ son, and TJ Regan, the documentary director about the film.
Randy Wilkens said his father worked to keep his professional life from overshadowing family life.
“Great thing about my father is he did not bring work home after work, when he’d get off the court or after a coaching session or what not,” Randy Wilkens said. “He’d come home and he was just dad. He tried to insulate our family growing up as much as he could from the limelight and the pressures that could be involved in that part of a lifestyle. We feel he did a fantastic job with us.”
Director T.J. Regan said he was able to visit Wilkens at his home while working on the project and that the production drew from extensive family materials.
“Randy kind of opened up the archive to his family and we have boxes and boxes of tapes that we were able to digitize and the film will take you back to all the great times of Lenny Wilkens and home videos and all of that,” Regan said.
Regan said the documentary is about more than basketball, describing it as a story about family and grief.
The documentary premiered August 1st at the Egyptian Theatre. Where to watch the documentary is still being figured out.
