VIRGINIA – Drivers are starting to see some relief at the pump as the cost of filling up continues to decline. According to GasBuddy, average gas prices in Virginia have fallen by approximately 11.5 cents per gallon in the last week, to $3.80 per gallon for regular gas.
Nationwide, prices are experiencing a similar downward trend. As of Aug. 11, the national average for a regular gallon of gas is $4.01, a 7-cent decrease from last week.
In Roanoke specifically, average gasoline prices have fallen roughly 10.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging approximately $3.76 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 155 stations in Roanoke. GasBuddy further reports that prices in the Star City are 14.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 82.2 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The cheapest station in Roanoke was roughly $3.37 per gallon while the most expensive was $4.09 per gallon, a difference of 72 cents per gallon. Comparatively, the lowest price in the state on Sunday was $3.25 per gallon while the highest was $5.79 per gallon, a difference of $2.54 per gallon.
“Average gasoline prices declined in 47 states over the last week while diesel fell in 39, with the national average price of gasoline posting a double-digit drop per gallon,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
De Haan added, “Diesel’s decline was roughly half that of gasoline, in part due to continued pressure on refined product markets from ongoing Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries. However, the wild ride continues. Iran is pushing back against a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and oil prices edged modestly higher in Sunday night trading, signaling that the recent relief may not last. With the Strait remaining closed, upward pressure on fuel prices could return quickly, and if things don’t go well, the national average could climb to its highest level ever recorded this late in the calendar year. For now, enjoy the dip, but keep a close eye on how the Strait situation develops in the days ahead.”
