Valhalla Golf Club owner says it will host another major championship
LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Could Valhalla Golf Club be in the mix for more major championship golf?
“I’m very confident because the PGA of America was so thrilled with how Louisville showed up for this,” Valhalla Golf Club owner Jimmy Kirchdorfer said.
Kirchdorfer and the club are preparing to host the 2028 Solheim Cup. It is the women’s version of the Ryder Cup.
Angela Stanford, the United States captain for the 2026 Solheim Cup, visited Valhalla on Monday. Her team will be announced on August 24.
“For the game of golf, you usually play for yourself, by yourself, and now all of a sudden you have 11 teammates,” Stanford said. “So the pressure there is a little bit different. You’re playing for your country. That’s a little different. So it is a very different week. It’s our best week every two years I believe. So it’s it’s very intense but it is the greatest stage that you’ll ever play on.”
Stanford won the Woodford Legends Invitational at the Woodford Club in Versailles on Sunday.
The 2026 Solheim Cup will be played at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. She says Valhalla will be a great venue in two years.
“I think when you have the history Valhalla does, you can see why major golf tournaments come here,” Stanford said. “I think adding a women’s event here is kind of the cherry on top. I think the community will really enjoy having the women here and this event is our biggest and best event.”
Valhalla has hosted the PGA Championship in 1996, 2000, 2014 and 2024. The Senior PGA Championship in 2004 and 2011 and the Ryder Cup in 2008.
The PGA Championship has announced sites through 2035, so the next available that could possibly be played at Valhalla would be in 2036.
“We’ve always had great, compelling finishes,” Kirchdorfer said. “The course has held up well and produced exciting finishes and great champions. So I’m very confident we are going to see major championship golf come to Valhalla.”
