WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (WGXA) — A student is injured, and a 14-year-old suspect is in custody after a shooting at Warner Robins High School on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to reports of a student shot on campus at around 2:15 p.m.
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office said the two students were in a verbal altercation inside a school bathroom when the altercation turned physical. That’s when the 14-year-old suspect brandished his firearm and shot the ninth-grade victim in the leg.
The suspect fled from the scene, but was later apprehended around half a mile from the school in the Huntington Hills neighborhood.
The suspect was taken into custody at around 3:20 p.m., per the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Houston County School District, the high school entered code red with students and staff secure in their classrooms.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Georgia State Patrol (GSP) helicopter landed on campus.

According to the City of Warner Robins, roads surrounding the high school, including Demon Valley Road and S. Davis Drive, were closed due to an active incident at the school.
The incident is active and ongoing, with the City of Warner Robins assisting the Houston County School District and the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, who were on the scene.
Motorists were urged to find alternate routes and avoid the area unless they are following the student pickup procedures provided by the Houston County Board of Education or law enforcement.

Warner Robins High School is currently under a Code Red. Students and staff are secure in their classrooms, and law enforcement is on the scene.We are actively monitoring the situation and will share additional information with families as soon as we are able. At this time, we ask that parents and visitors do not come to the school, so that law enforcement and school personnel can respond without interruption.Thank you for your patience and cooperation. We will provide an update as soon as more information is available.
The Houston County School District announced that a controlled dismissal began, with students released “in a safe and orderly manner” as students were dismissed in phases. Law enforcement remained on campus as dismissal took longer than usual, with buses being loaded first, followed by car riders and then student drivers and walkers.
The sheriff’s office is planning a press conference at 6 p.m.; WGXA was in attendance.
The principal of the high school, Brett Wallace, announced that school will be back in session starting Monday, and that additional counselors and support staff will be available for students and staff.
Today was a hard day for our school and the entire community. We are grateful that the student who was injured is receiving care, and we are incredibly thankful for the quick response of law enforcement and first responders.Warner Robins High School will be closed for all students Thursday and Friday. Teachers will return Friday, August 14, and students will return Monday, August 17. There will be no virtual learning for students during this time.
