Sixteen people have been selected to serve on the jury for the Tupac Shakur murder trial.

The 36 potential jurors returned to court, where Judge Carli Kierny read off the names of 20 people as excused.

There will be 12 jurors and four alternates for the trial, which is expected to last several weeks. All 16 will sit during the proceedings. Once the case is submitted to the jury, the 12 jurors will deliberate.

All parties will return to court on Monday morning for opening statements.

Potential jurors in the Tupac Shakur murder trial who advanced through the first round of questioning are due to return to court Thursday.

Prosecutors have charged Davis with murder, alleging he helped orchestrate the fatal 1996 shooting of the rap icon near the Las Vegas Strip.

A total of 36 potential jurors were asked to come back after three days of questioning. Dozens of others were dismissed for cause.

That field will be narrowed down to 16 people — 12 jurors and four alternates — for the trial.

Both sides have 10 peremptory challenges, meaning they can remove a potential juror without giving a reason.

In the three days of questioning so far, the prosecution and defense have asked the potential jurors about their knowledge of Shakur, how they feel about gangs, and whether they believe they can be impartial.
