Bald eagle Shadow spotted with KD1 days after Jackie’s death, leaving fans chirping

Days after celebrity bald eagle Jackie died, her former partner Shadow appears to have met a new bird.
Jackie had raised multiple eaglets in Southern California, drawing the attention of millions who watched her and Shadow through livestreams from the Friends of Big Bear Valley’s cameras.
But in July, she had gotten into a fight with other eagles. Video showed Jackie appearing ill, and the San Dimas Raptor Rescue team worked to rescue her.
For weeks, Jackie received treatment, but the Ojai Raptor Center quickly determined that she was anemic. The veterinary team put Jackie through oxygen therapy, supportive treatment and constant monitoring in the intensive care unit.
Her condition only worsened until she died on Aug. 10.
According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, Jackie in 2012 became the first recorded bald eagle chick ever to be hatched in Big Bear Valley. Her name was originally Jack until she grew larger than her parents. Bald eagle females are larger than males, so the organization renamed her to Jackie.
Since her death, observers of the eagle cam noticed that Shadow seems to be with a new eagle, named KD1.
This is apparently not unusual. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, once a partner dies, the surviving eagle may not take long to find a new mate. Breeding season last from about January through July or August in most of California.
It’s also not unusual for the surviving eagle to use the same nest after meeting a new partner.
