CRAWFORD COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) — A Crawford County deer farm has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, state agriculture officials confirmed Friday.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) announced the positive test result came from a two-year-old female elk at the farm, according to a news release.
The farm is now under quarantine while DATCP and U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarians and staff investigate the case.
Chronic wasting disease is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and moose. A prion causes the disease, which attacks the animal’s nervous system.
The quarantine will remain in place while officials complete their epidemiological investigation to determine how the disease entered the farm and whether other animals may be affected.
