These two split a four-game series back at the beginning of April in Phoenix. The Braves are going for their third straight victory after a series win over the New York Mets at home, and Atlanta is going for its fourth win in its last five games. The Braves nearly squandered their lead in the NL East division race heading into the All-Star break, but with the recent slide of the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta’s lead is back to nine games. The Braves are 73-48 and 41-21 at home, and look like the clear favorite to win their first division title since 2023. Arizona is coming off a surprising series loss to the Colorado Rockies during the week. The Diamondbacks are in a fight for an NL Wild Card spot, with a 64-58 record, and are 28-31 on the road. Arizona is now back out of the third and final NL Wild Card spot, sitting a half-game behind the Philadelphia Phillies. The D’Backs are trying to avoid losing three straight in this opener tonight. Atlanta will be the favorite at home tonight, and a lot of that has to do with the Braves starting Chris Sale. The veteran lefty is 12-7 with a 2.20 ERA in 123 innings. The Diamondbacks should be prepared, though, when they start Brandon Pfaadt, who is 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA in 85.2 innings.

Tyler Mahle had a solid start, going six innings and allowing only four hits and one run with seven strikeouts, improving to 4-9 for the season. Atlanta picked up Mahle from the San Francisco Giants, and so far it seems that the change of scenery has done him some good. Lane Thomas homered in the second inning, while Austin Riley and another former Giant, Mike Yastrzemski, hit homers in the seventh to bounce back from back-to-back homers hit by the Mets that trimmed Atlanta’s lead down to one.

Arizona lost its rubber match at home against the Colorado Rockies in a 6-4 game on Wednesday. Arizona lost despite the Rockies walking 10 batters, as the Diamondbacks left 15 runners on base compared to five for Colorado. Brett Sullivan hit a three-run shot in the second, and Zac Veen hit a two-run homer in the fourth that put the Rockies ahead for good. Arizona had bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings, but it only came away with one run. The story was similar for Arizona with its 10 walks, as only one of those came home to score. That simply won’t fly against one of the best teams in the National League tonight.
