Wake County commissioners on Monday will be available to take questions from the public about the possible merger between WakeMed and Atrium Health.
A public hearing will be held at 2 p.m. at the Wake County Justice Center, located at 300 S. Salisbury St. in downtown Raleigh. People who wish to speak during the meeting can sign up online beginning at 9 a.m. or register to speak in person before the meeting begins.
A vote has not yet been scheduled for the potential merger, which has received a lot of pushback and criticism over questions about higher costs and a lower quality of care.
The investment is worth at least $2 billion. WakeMed leaders have said Atrium’s financial backing will help them serve a growing population, while opponents say the plan
could lead to higher costs and a lower quality of care.
County leaders must
approve two legal documents before the hospital can move forward with the process. One of those would
require WakeMed to turn the hospital over to the county if it does not improve
or maintain healthcare services for the region.
The county would not
contribute any funding, new property or assets to WakeMed in the new
deal.
