KITTERY, Maine (WGME) — Starting Monday, people in Kittery are being asked to cut down their water use.

The restrictions are indefinite, and people who don’t comply could face hundreds of dollars in fines and have their water shut off.

The town says the new rules are due to declining water supply levels and dry conditions.

The restrictions apply to all Kittery Water District customers.

For lawn watering, customers are limited to two days a week between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Odd-numbered addresses can water their lawns on Mondays and Thursdays, while even-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays and Fridays. No lawn watering is allowed on Saturdays or Sundays.

The water district says a first violation of the lawn-watering restrictions will result in a written warning. A second violation carries a $100 fine, while a third violation carries a $500 fine and could result in the customer’s water being shut off.

Residents are also encouraged to limit outdoor water use, run appliances only with full loads and repair any leaks.

The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
