LEHIGH TWP., Pa. – Golfers at Woodstone Country Club are putting with passion and a purpose Monday morning.
“It takes a village, and that’s what we have here, a village,” said Steve Jeltz.
Former Philadelphia Phillies player Steve Jeltz is one of 25 celebrities making up that village, all part of the Strength and Love Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lehigh Township.
It’s more than just a game, offering hole challenges, as well as a silent auction.
“Put a bid down and walk away with something cool. Some graphics, some artwork, some signed, autographed memorabilia,” said Nate Kline, the vice chairman of the Strength & Love Foundation.
Community members are golfing with athletes, such as Rafael Santana and OJ Anderson, with proceeds benefiting Camelot for Children.
The nonprofit has been around for more than 40 years in Allentown and supports six to 19-year-olds who are living with serious, chronic, or terminal illnesses.
“It just can be very competitive and challenging, particularly with changes in the economy to fundraise enough, but we are very proud to provide all of our services to our children and families at no cost,” said its Executive Director, Emily Werner.
Offering its programs to more than 50 kids, Werner says she’s grateful for the support from the Strength and Love Foundation.
“It’s always tough to raise money and awareness for the local families and children that need it,” said Kline.
Operating as a nonprofit itself, the group says they started the tournament to bring the community together for a cause beyond the course.
“That was our mission, is to make sure that the money stays here in the valley and has as much of a reach and impact here locally as it could,” Kline explained.
An impact that those taking part say is crucial to better the lives of the younger generations.
“When I see these kids, and they don’t have the gifts that I was given, but they so appreciate what we’re doing, that means a lot to me,” added Jeltz.
