FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A woman was found stabbed to death Monday morning in the Great Falls area of Fairfax County, according to police.

Officers went to Georgetown Pike near Old Dominion Drive around 7 a.m. for a woman unconscious outside a vehicle. She had trauma to her upper body, and police pronounced her dead at the scene.

“There is no immediate indication that this was a random act,” said Captain Jason Chandler. “We’re just asking the community if they saw something around 7am to please reach out to us.”

Police said a runner found the woman. The vehicle near her body was registered to her.

The location was described as a parking area that leads to several trails in the Great Falls area. Investigators have not said why the woman was at the park, how long she had been there or whether she arrived alone.

People who frequent these trails said they are surprised and unsettled by this crime because of how popular this area is.

“I come here very often. I feel very safe. I actually come here with my cousin. She comes to visit me and we hike here by ourselves just me and her. That’s why it’s very shocking to me because this has always felt like a safe space for us to come and hike by ourselves,” said Jay Sanchez.

The trails are not the only part of this park people visit.

Visitors also walk to various swimming holes along the walking paths.

“If you hike down, it’s pretty popular because it’s closely located to this really nice swimming hole. There’s usually 20 people, at least, swimming there every day, especially when it’s warm out like now, so it’s really weird to hear someone was killed here. It seems like a pretty safe place,” said Wyatt Grace.

Detectives are actively following up on leads, but police have not released a description of a possible suspect.

Investigators are canvassing the area for surveillance cameras and are asking community members who may have video from around the time of the stabbing to contact police.

Police opened the road around 5pm Monday as well as the parking lot to the trailhead at Difficult Run Valley Stream Park which is up the road from Great Falls Park.
