COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said today that it has a new, colorful addition after the birth of a rare female “silvered” langur monkey.

The baby was born on July 30 to first-time mother Coral and father Kuati, zoo officials announced.

According to the animal care staff, the infant is strong and doing well, while Coral is already displaying excellent maternal instincts.

Visitors looking into the zoo’s Asia Quest habitat might do a double take at the newborn’s appearance as silvered langurs are born covered in a bright orange fur.

The striking coloration is temporary and will gradually transition into the species’ signature silvery-gray coat over the next few months.

Her arrival marks the first silvered langur birth at the Columbus Zoo in several years and brings the facility’s total langur population to 17.

Guests can see the new youngest monkey of the langur troop in the Asia Quest section of the park during regular zoo hours.
