It was up-and-down rollercoaster of a Texas fall camp for linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith. The ride has taken its last dip.

Smith is no longer with the Longhorn football program, according to Inside Texas sources. One source said, “he is done.” Other sources confirmed as much with IT.

Inside Texas reported last Saturday that Smith was not a part of the Longhorns’ first scrimmage of camp. Head coach Steve Sarkisian said in a postgame Zoom call with the Texas beat media that Smith was one of several players who was sidelined with the flu. IT, however, heard there was internal strife between Smith and the program.

“‘Mental health’ is how it was classified to me,” an IT source said.

The same source told IT Smith “fell out of favor” with Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Nonetheless, Smith returned to practice this week and actually had a few solid sessions, per IT’s Eric Nahlin. That backs up what Sarkisian said in that Smith had his best practice of camp shortly before he missed the scrimmage. He returned to action and picked up where he left off in spite of some things not being squared away behind the scenes.

In the end, Smith departs Texas having been someone who could have played a large role in the middle of one of the most talented defenses in the country. He might not have started, but he’d have had potential to be a big snap eater as a second-teamer had he stayed.

In 2025 as a sophomore, Smith played 450 snaps for the Texas defense. That ranked fourth among Longhorn linebackers behind Anthony Hill, Trey Moore and Liona Lefau. Moore played DE and LB. All three of those players are no longer on the Longhorn roster, so Smith’s rise was right there in front of him. A nagging shoulder injury limited him in the spring and has affected him through the summer and into the fall, however. He has not been fully physically right all year.

In the meantime, Texas acquired Pitt transfer Rasheem Biles, a preseason All-American, as well as Florida State’s Justin Cryer. Both of them have had outstanding offseasons to set them up to be Texas’ top two linebackers in 2026. Senior Brad Spence and freshman Tyler Atkinson also figure to play into the rotation this year, and freshman Rocky Cummings has had a strong camp as well.

With his health and whatever else on his mind, Smith was a bit lost in the shuffle. He leaves Texas have played in 28 games with one start. He registered 75 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. The Jasper, Texas, native has three years of eligibility remaining as a result of the new 5-for-5 rule in the NCAA.
