SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A Savannah artist is inviting residents to turn their ideas about democracy into art during a free community event.
Positive Energy Artist Joanne Morton will launch “Circles of Hope: Voices of Democracy” from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Mailbox Cafe, located at 1305 Barnard St.
The event is free and open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Participants will create handmade “Visionary Art Circles” answering the question: What does democracy mean to you?
Each creation will become part of Morton’s Manifesting Mobile, a traveling community art installation featuring more than 1,000 handmade circles. The project has appeared in cities across the country since 2010. Organizers call the event “Democracy in Action,” highlighting civic engagement through voting, listening and creativity.
Voter registration will also be available.
The launch will recognize the anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, which secured women’s constitutional right to vote, while also honoring the legacy of the Civil Rights Act and its role in advancing equality.
Following the launch, Circles of Hope will continue as a traveling national initiative. Schools, community groups, civic organizations and businesses may participate by hosting workshops, contributing artwork or partnering on future exhibitions.
