CSRA sees its 3rd rabid animal in a week – a raccoon in Aiken

  • August 22, 2026

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – The CSRA has now seen at least three rabid animals in a week.

The latest is a raccoon in Aiken, which followed a horse in Aiken and a raccoon in Evans.

The latest raccoon was found near Bertram Drive and Danzig Lane in Aiken.

No people are known to have been exposed, but two dogs were exposed and will be quarantined.

The raccoon was submitted for testing Wednesday and was confirmed to have rabies Thursday.

The raccoon is the eighth animal in Aiken County to test positive for rabies in 2026. There have been 73 cases of rabid animals statewide this year. Since 2002, South Carolina has averaged approximately 136 positive cases a year. In 2025, three of the 101 confirmed rabies cases in South Carolina were in Aiken County.

On Thursday, South Carolina officials reported a rabid horse near Wire Road and Jaws Lane exposed 13 people. The horse was submitted to a state laboratory for testing Tuesday and was confirmed to have rabies Wednesday.

Across the Savannah River, authorities reported Wednesday that a raccoon had tested positive for rabies after biting someone the week before at Blanchard Woods Park.
