BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that happened during a football game at Independence High School Friday night, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Police announced Saturday that the teenage suspect is in custody.
The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, August 21, inside the gates of the school’s football stadium and south of the football field as the game was taking place, according to police.

Officers found a 17-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he later died.

Investigators initially said the shooting appeared to stem from an isolated altercation involving a group of individuals.
In announcing the arrest, Bakersfield police said:
“Our hearts are with the family of the 17-year-old who lost his life, & all those impacted by this tragedy. We have a strong community. That strength will carry us forward.”
Police also released a photo showing the back of the teenage suspect as he is being taken into custody, with an officer patting him down and the suspect in handcuffs.

Bakersfield police have not yet released additional details about the arrest or potential charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
