Amazon delivery driver accused of hitting elderly man at Elk Grove gas station, police say
A man who was working as an Amazon delivery driver at the time is due in court in connection with attacking an elderly man at a gas station, the Elk Grove Police Department told KCRA 3 on Tuesday.
Terrence Wheeler, 30, of Antioch, faces charges related to felony elder abuse, felony criminal threats and misdemeanor battery, police said.
Around 3:15 p.m. on March 30, a 72-year-old man pulled into a parking stall at a gas station at Sheldon Road and East Stockton Boulevard, police said. A man, later identified as Wheeler, got upset because he had wanted to park in the same spot.
Police said Wheeler confronted the elderly man and threatened to attack him. Wheeler then struck the man on the side of his head as the man was walking past Wheeler. The man fell to the ground.
Video obtained by KCRA 3 shows the moment Wheeler smacked the man across the head, causing him to lose balance and fall. The attack happened at the ampm.
Investigators, after learning of the assault, identified Wheeler and contacted him, police said. Wheeler later turned himself in that day and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
His next court appearance is set for Sept. 24, police said.
The Buzzbee Law Firm said it has filed suit at the Sacramento County Superior Court and is seeking $10 million.
KCRA 3 reached out to Amazon for comment on the case. The company said that Wheeler was working for an independent business that contracts with Amazon to deliver packages at the time.
After learning of the attack months ago, Amazon said it told the independent business that Wheeler is no longer eligible to deliver Amazon packages.
