Convenience stores and restaurant chains in Japan are cutting prices of rice-based products to reflect a decline in costs of the grain and to attract customers.

Lawson stores will lower prices of 20 kinds of onigiri rice balls by about 10 yen, or 6 cents, from September 29. For example, the price of a tuna-mayonnaise rice ball will drop to 171 yen from 181 yen.

Seven-Eleven Japan and FamilyMart also say they will cut prices of the popular rice balls.

Restaurant chain Kura Sushi is following suit with lower prices for its sushi plates, saying the move is to attract more families.

The company says it will cut its lowest-priced sushi to 110 yen from 115 yen from September 4.
