Michigan offers five-star Ohio State commit

Michigan is taking a shot at one of Ohio State’s highest ranked commitments in the 2028 class. The Wolverines extended an offer earlier this week to five-star defensive lineman Jameer Whyce, the No. 30 overall recruit in the nation that has been committed to the Buckeyes since last October.

Since committing to Ohio State, Whyce has continued adding major offers, including LSU, Notre Dame, and now Michigan. But there’s an important caveat — 247Sports reports there has been no indication Whyce is currently interested in other programs, so this isn’t a flip watch just yet.

Still, Michigan getting involved with a five-star defensive lineman already committed to its biggest rival makes Whyce a name worth monitoring as the Wolverines continue building their 2028 defensive line board. With him being an Ohio native, it’s highly, highly unlikely he flips to the Wolverines, but it’s always worth shooting your shot and seeing where things go.

Michigan trending for legacy DB prospect

Michigan appears to be in a strong spot for one of its top in-state defensive back targets in the 2028 class. Saline (Mich.) standout Marquis Ray, the No. 624 overall prospect and No. 30 safety in the Rivals Industry Rankings, picked up a Michigan offer this summer and quickly became one of the Wolverines’ more intriguing in-state targets.

On3’s Ethan McDowell joined Rivals national insider Allen Trieu in putting in a prediction for Michigan, with McDowell setting his confidence level at 70 percent. Ray earned his offer after camping in Ann Arbor in June.

“I’m feeling pumped up,” Ray told McDowell earlier this summer. “I put in the work today, put in the work the whole week, prepared for it and I was satisfied with the outcome. Still have more work to do, but it was a great camp today and I’m satisfied.”

Michigan has plenty working in its favor. Ray is a legacy recruit whose father, Marcus, played for the Wolverines, while former Michigan standout Mike Sainristil has become a mentor to him.

Ray has already locked in a Sept. 5 visit for the season opener against Western Michigan and could return the following week for Oklahoma. He mentioned January as a possible commitment timeline, but for now, Michigan looks like the team to beat as he looks to narrow things down.

‘Dream school’ Michigan gets first visit from four-star CB

Michigan will also welcome another talented 2028 defensive back for the opener. Baltimore (Md.) Mount Saint Joseph standout Kinnard Mahomes, the No. 320 overall prospect, will make his first trip to Ann Arbor on Sept. 5.

Michigan offered Mahomes in June, and apparently the Wolverines didn’t need much of an introduction.

“Michigan has been my dream school for a while,” Mahomes told On3’s McDowell ($).

Mahomes also holds offers from Notre Dame, Penn State, Oregon and Tennessee, and has visits planned to Indiana, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.

Michigan has several other 2028 prospects planning trips as well. Quarterback Carter Zingelmann, the No. 158 overall recruit, intends to make a game-day visit this fall, while linebacker Brayden Bonik, No. 116 overall, is expected for the Penn State game in October.

Three-star tight end Jack McNamara, the No. 15 tight end nationally, will also be at the season opener. It will be his third Michigan visit this year.
