CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. (Gray News) – Police in California arrested a mother accused of breaking through the glass of a school bus door, climbing inside and confronting the bus driver.
According to reports, the incident began when the driver stopped the school bus on a highway in Calaveras County on Aug. 24. KOVR reported that a student inside the bus said the driver stopped it because the bus was getting rowdy.
KCRA said a student then climbed out of the window, prompting the bus driver to tell other students to close the windows and stay seated.
Some of the students called or texted their parents from inside the bus. According to KCRA, one parent showed up and broke the bus’s glass door to get inside and confront the bus driver.
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a disturbance between a parent and the bus driver. According to the sheriff’s office, the parent was arrested and charged with vandalism.
Video from inside the bus, obtained by KOVR, shows the chaotic scene inside the school bus as multiple students leave through the windows while the bus was stopped. Other students remained on the bus until they were given the all-clear to get off.
At some point in the video, an adult woman is seen climbing through a bus window. She is then seen jumping over the seats and confronting the bus driver.
KOVR said law enforcement has not released the identity of the parent arrested, nor has it confirmed whether the woman seen in the video is the person who was later arrested.
The sheriff’s office did not provide further details about what instigated the confrontation.
According to KOVR, the Calaveras County Unified School District superintendent said a “student behavior incident” started the series of events.
The superintendent also told KOVR the school district is reviewing the video of the incident and taking appropriate action against the students involved. KCRA reported the school district would not provide any further details.
