South Florida braces for rain and gusty winds from Dolly remnants
WPBF 25 First Warning meteorologists are monitoring two areas in the Atlantic basin, with the remnants of Dolly expected to produce rain in South Florida later this week. Another system, Tropical Depression Five, formerly Invest 97-L, formed Monday morning in the Gulf.
Remnants of Dolly
The remnants of former Tropical Storm Dolly are producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms near and over portions of Hispaniola, Turks and Caicos, and the southeastern Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center.
In South Florida, numerous showers and storms can be expected with gusty winds starting Wednesday, which will keep the flood threat high, said WPBF Chief Certified Meteorologist Cris Martinez.
“Significant development of this system is no longer expected while it moves west northwestward at 15 to 20 mph over the southwestern Atlantic. Regardless, the system could bring locally heavy rains and gusty winds to portions of these areas during the next couple of days,” NHC said.
The system has a zero percent chance of development over the next two to seven days.

Named storms
Dolly became the fourth named tropical storm this season after Arthur, Bertha and Cristobal. There have been no hurricanes this season.
At this time last year, there were six named storms, with Erin the only hurricane.
In the 2005 hurricane season, through August, there were 11 named storms when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.
In the past 60 years, only seven seasons had to wait until September for the first Atlantic hurricane, according to research by Weather.com. It last happened in 2022 when Fiona and Ian were so damaging that their names were retired.
The longest wait for the first hurricane in any satellite-era season was Sept. 11, both in 2013 and 2002. The other late years: 1984, 2002, 2013 and 1984.
Hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30.
