Maine astronaut Jessica Meir set for 7th spacewalk

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, a Caribou native, is scheduled to step outside the International Space Station on Tuesday for her seventh career spacewalk.
Meir and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot are expected to begin the spacewalk at about 8:30 a.m. EDT, according to NASA. Live coverage is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.
The astronauts are expected to spend about 6 1/2 hours outside the station completing maintenance and science-related work.
NASA said their tasks will include replacing a navigational aid used by spacecraft, preparing a cosmic particle detector for future upgrades and installing jumper cables to improve data-relay systems.

Tuesday’s outing will be Meir’s seventh career spacewalk and Adenot’s third. NASA said it will be the 284th spacewalk conducted at the International Space Station since 1998.
The Expedition 75 crew spent Monday preparing spacesuits, tools and procedures inside the station’s Quest airlock.
Meir previously returned to the International Space Station this year for her second long-duration mission in orbit. The Maine native first traveled to space in 2019 and became one of the first two women to participate in an all-female spacewalk.
Tuesday’s spacewalk will be the fourth conducted outside the International Space Station in about a month.
