WAYNESBORO, Va. (7News) — A 19-year-old man forced his way into a Waynesboro, Virginia, elementary school Wednesday morning and was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the school library, police said.

Waynesboro police identified the man as Anthony I. Ignatiadis-Isabelle, 19, of Augusta County.

Police said they were told around 9:12 a.m. Sept. 12 about a suspicious person on the campus grounds of Westwood Hills Elementary School on Rosser Avenue.

Authorities said Ignatiadis-Isabelle forced his way into the building. Officers arrived within minutes, entered the school and found him dead inside the library.

Police said about three minutes passed between the initial call and officers finding the gunman.

No students were inside the library at the time.

An adult staff member was shot and is expected to survive their injuries, according to police. The staff member was treated and released.

Waynesboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Cassell said the school immediately went into lockdown and credited staff and law enforcement for their response.

“Our safety and security protocols and procedures worked,” Cassell said. “Staff notified law enforcement immediately, and our school executed our lockdown procedures. Every student and staff member is safe and returned home to their families.”

Students were later reunited with their families at Westminister Presbyterian Church.

Westwood Hills Elementary School will be closed Thursday. The school division said it contact families directly about available resources and any additional changes to school operations.

Authorities said several aspects of the incident remain under investigation and more information will be released as it is confirmed.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger took to social media on the shooting.

“I am monitoring the emergency at Westwood Hills Elementary School this morning,” Gov. Spanberger wrote. “My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school. Thank you to the first responders who are assisting at the scene. Augusta County and Waynesboro law enforcement and schools are continuing to provide updated guidance to community members.”
