IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – As temperatures continue to stay in the 90s and an afternoon football game this Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa Athletics is making some changes to keep attendees safe.
Fans will be able to bring their own sealed water bottles into the stadium, or bring in empty refillable water bottles.
Iowa Football says 4,000 refillable water bottles will be handed out at Gates A, B and M.
There will be additional first aid resources and cooling areas to prevent heat illness.
Johnson County Ambulance Services will have a UTV in the parking lots before the game for faster response to calls.
There will also be UIHC physicians and nurses, as well as medical students on site to assist anyone in need.
The University of Iowa is asking football fans to start hydrating now to prepare for the heat and consume alcohol in moderation.
Additionally, fans are encouraged to wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothes, wear sunscreen, and get to a shady or air-conditioned area if they feel dizzy, nauseous or weak.
Someone experiencing a heat-related illness may not realize they are sick. They can become confused or lose consciousness. Fans are asked to keep a buddy system to watch others for heat-induced symptoms.
The Hawkeyes take on Northern Illinois at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The game will also be on Big Ten Network and Hawkeye Radio Network.
