Lindsay Clancy was taken out of the courtroom almost immediately after the judge announced his intention to declare a mistrial and left the bench, having given the defense one hour to file an emergency appeal.
Clancy’s family was silent and solemn as they filed out of the courtroom.
Members of the public and journalists gathered outside the main door as groups of people walked out of the courthouse.
One woman attending the proceedings was visibly shaken. “Wow,” she said, sighing as she walked out.
A crowd of roughly 30 members of the public was loud and disorganized after leaving the courtroom, prompting stern instructions from a court officer.
“Turn around and walk backward,” he shouted, as he herded the line away from the courtroom. “Keep walking until I say stop.”
The public line was moved far down the hall, to the other side of the building.
CNN spoke briefly with Mary Stacey, who has traveled from Worcester, Massachusetts, to attend the multi-day trial.
“It’s a shame. There’s no winning here,” she said of the jury’s impasse. “But I’ve got to give the jury credit for how hard they’ve worked.”
