Liverpool are the favourites to win the Premier League title in the 2025/26 season.

The Reds were the best team in the country last term. They won the league by 10 points in the end and were deservedly crowned the champions.

The likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, who have both strengthened their squad, will be hoping to dethrone Liverpool, but the Reds could prove to be too strong.

Mohamed Salah will be Arne Slot’s main man again, but another player could outshine him this season.

Michael Owen backs Florian Wirtz to win the Player of the Season award over Mohamed Salah in 2025/26

Salah was one of the best players in the world last season.

The Egypt international was the biggest reason why Liverpool won the title in 2024/25. He directly contributed to 57 goals last term, 47 of which came in the Premier League.

Salah deservedly won the EA Sports Player of the Season award at the end of the campaign, and many people feel he is the favourite to retain that award.

However, Michael Owen, who knows what it takes to win the Player of the Season award, thinks another Liverpool star will win it in the upcoming campaign – Florian Wirtz.

He told the Premier League’s official website: “I think he’ll be top of the assists and I think he has got loads of ability – he plays in a position where he is going to be involved in so much of the good stuff that Liverpool do.

“I think if he adapts to the Premier League, then he could be absolutely anything and one of the stars of the show.”

Alan Shearer, on the other hand, thinks Salah will win it again, while Don Hutchinson believes Virgil van Dijk will get the award.

It remains to be seen if Wirtz can prove Owen right by outshining the two veteran Liverpool superstars.

Wirtz is a phenomenal player.

The German was absolutely outstanding in the Bundesliga at Bayer Leverkusen, and there is no reason why he can’t be a star in the Premier League too.

Owen thinks Wirtz will provide more assists than any other player in the division in the upcoming campaign, and he already has one to his name from the Community Shield.

The way Wirtz linked up with Hugo Ekitike against Crystal Palace at Wembley was a massive positive, and we think those two players will combine on plenty of occasions in the upcoming season.

We’re sure Salah will back himself to win the Player of the Season award in 2025/26, but if Wirtz beats him to the accolade, it would mean that Liverpool have had another brilliant campaign.
