In an interview for Sports Illustrated, the retired former NBA superstar revealed that he actively rooted for the Knicks to win the championship.

“I kind of had them winning the entire time,” Rose admitted. “My son is a Jalen [Brunson] fan. So he was cheering for them the whole playoffs. I called Rick [Brunson] right before they got to the Finals and told him that they was going to play against Wemby [Victor Wembanyama] now. And if they was going to play against them, that they was going to win.”

Derrick Rose supported Knicks’ NBA title rally

After over half a century, the New York Knicks finally got over the hump by winning the NBA title in the 2025-26 NBA season.

Led by Jalen Brunson, who was named the Finals MVP in their five-game triumph against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, the Knicks established one of the greatest playoff runs in league history with a dominant 16-3 record.

Seeing Brunson and the Knicks make it to the top, Derrick Rose is undeniably happy for them. The former NBA MVP played in New York from 2021 to 2023, where he served as a key veteran presence for the group.

For one year, he also managed to be a teammate of Brunson before heading into his final NBA season in 2023-24.

“It worked out and I’m just happy for Jalen,” Rose added. “I’m happy for his family, like Rick, all the time that he put into his family and Jalen.

“I watched from afar, but it’s inspiring.”
