Japan’s weather agency warned Sunday of intense rain in Tokyo and six other prefectures heading into Monday due to the influence of a typhoon and a weather front.
People in the Japanese capital and six other prefectures — Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Shizuoka, Aichi and Mie — are advised to exercise caution, with the Japan Meteorological Agency forecasting the formation of a linear rainband bringing heavy rain over a period of few hours.
The weather agency called for vigilance against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers in parts of eastern Japan.
A front has remained south of the Japanese archipelago and atmospheric conditions are expected to be unstable as warm, moist air from Typhoon Krovanh flows into it. The front is expected to move northward going into Monday, the agency said.
In the 24 hours through 6 a.m. Monday, up to 300 millimeters of rain is forecast for the central Japanese region of Tokai, 250 mm for Kanto-Koshin, which includes Tokyo, and 200 mm for Kinki centering on Osaka.
The typhoon was around 130 kilometers east-southeast of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, Sunday morning.
