Both teams had a fine goal from the right wing, followed by a fine goal from a sub. Everton’s second equaliser was the finest of the four. And Maitland-Niles might not have got on the field had it not been for the injury to James Garner, who had just moved to right-back. But David Moyes had already grabbed the initiative by sending on Jack Grealish – and Michael Carrick had blunted United by withdrawing Marcus Rashford. Carrick may have been thinking of the next two games: before the Manchester derby next Sunday, there is United’s return to the Champions League on Thursday.

“Incredibly annoyed about that,” says Joshua Keeling, who supports United. “We’ve got to win when we go ahead twice, especially when we’re winning with seconds to go. Also, Everton scored after the added time – not sure why the referee has played over the five minutes, but it’s cost us there. The derby is now an even bigger game.
”Having said all that, Everton will take points off a lot of teams at home this season, and I think we’re on the right track under Carrick. Just some issues to sort out early in the season.”
Everton inch up to eighth, on five points, level with Liverpool among others. Man United are 11th wiht four points, sandwiched between Brighton and Sunderland. And both clubs will remain there as Arsenal and Chelsea are above them.
Here’s the man of the moment, Ainsley Maitland-Niles. “It felt like a win,” he says. “The crowd was with us, we fight to the end and that’s how you get that type of result. The ball fell to me at the edge of the box, I put my foot through it and it ended up in the top corner.” Not content with hitting a worldie, he’s now doing my job for me.
Meanwhile the build-up continues to the big game of the weekend. It’s Arsenal v Chelsea, it’s That Defence v Rogers and Palmer, so do feel free to join the great Rob Smyth.
United had more of the ball (55-45), but Everton had more shots (18-14), more corner (4-3), more shots on target (6-3) and more grit. United, not for the first time, didn’t seem to know how to kill their opponents off. They scored twice in the second half, yet spent 40 minutes in between doing very little.
So United concede twice for the third time out of three. And Everton remain unbeaten!
