5 dead after Amazon Air 21 Air aircraft overruns runway at Miami International Airport
MIAMI —
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at a South Florida airport.
The FAA issued a ground stop at Miami International Airport on Sunday, Sept. 6, because of a disabled aircraft on the runway.
The FAA database notes the ground stop was effective at 1:43 p.m.
According to ABC affiliate station WSVN-TV ABC Miami, all departures from the airport were stopped after a purported video captured the aftermath of an aircraft with an Amazon logo off the runway.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon due to a disabled aircraft.
“We can confirm that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today,” Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson told WPBF 25 News Sunday afternoon in a statement. “This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details. We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened. Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”
During a press conference on Sunday evening, Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said five people died while with five others sustained injuries.
Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue said that it is mitigating a fuel leak.

An FAA spokesperson provided WPBF 25 News the following preliminary information:
21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 6.
The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA will investigate. Contact the airline for additional information.
Miami International Airport released the following statement:
Prime Air Flight 7598 overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway at approximately 2 p.m. today, leaving the aircraft disabled at the northwest end of the airport.
All MIA runways and taxiways are currently closed, and a full ground stop is in effect. Passengers with flights scheduled today should check directly with their airline for flight status updates before heading to the airport.
Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue released the following statement:
Over 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units are on scene of an incident involving a plane that overran a runway and struck multiple vehicles near Miami International Airport.
Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing.
Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients.
