Republicans have been wanting to cut entitlement programs for a long time. Entitlement programs like Social Security. But… how is it an entitlement if they took money out of your paycheck for it while you worked?
That’s one of Republicans’ favorite techniques of deception: misname things so as to mislead people as to their nature. If enough American taxpayers forget that they paid into Social Security, maybe they won’t mind if Social Security is eliminated to fund tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk.
Not so fast, says AARP (formerly American Association of Retired Persons). They have an ad that I saw on NBC this morning. I couldn’t find it on AARP’s YouTube channel, but this longer (minute and a half) video makes the same point: you paid into Social Security and it’s owed to you when you retire.
