FAIRFAX, Va. (7News) — Two drivers are facing charges after a fiery Sunday crash killed three people on I-66 in Fairfax, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

At 4:10 p.m. in the westbound I-66 Express Lanes at mile marker 64.3, a Honda Pilot rammed into the back of a truck that was stopped in the right travel lane. The truck was carrying oxygen tanks.

The Honda erupted in flames and all three people inside the car died.

VSP’s early investigation revealed a Toyota 4Runner was also involved in what led up to the crash. After talking with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the Toyota driver and truck driver were charged with reckless driving.

7News spoke with Aspen Fetty, who saw the fireball erupt from the deadly crash.

“That was by far the most devastating thing I’ve ever witnessed,” Fetty said.

Traffic was jammed for hours on Sunday as multiple lanes and all express lanes of westbound I-66 were closed due to the crash.

All lanes were officially reopened just before 11 p.m.
