Why are vultures swarming this Louisville neighborhood?

Alex SuckowLOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Vultures have invaded a neighborhood in Louisville.

Neighbors say they started gathering Thursday morning on North 27th Street in the Portland neighborhood.

The big, black birds were on rooftops, power lines, on the ground picking at loose garbage.

Photos shared by neighbors show one home had at least 15 on its roof at one time.

“It’s pretty eerie out here,” we heard officers say via Broadcastify.

While neighbors say they’ve seen vulture around there before, this is more than normal.

So what’re they doing there?

We don’t know yet for sure.

According to the University of Kentucky, the number of the migratory birds tend to increase across the state in the fall as they move south.

They are attracted to garbage (like the pile spilled on the street), dead animals, as well as high, open spaces for perching, like the roofs they were spotted on.
