NEW YORK — A fan waving a Palestinian flag ran onto the field at 9:11 p.m. ET on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday at Yankee Stadium and was quickly tackled and detained by security.
The fan entered the field of play from the left-field seats and sprinted toward center field, evading several police officers and stadium security for a few seconds before being detained in the outfield grass.
After officials escorted him from the field beyond the center-field wall, fans seated above the New York Mets’ bullpen showered him with beer cans. They booed him out of the stadium before the crowd erupted in unison with “USA” chants.
The Yankees declined to comment on the incident.

The delay came in the top of the seventh inning before the biggest pitch of the game. The Mets had the bases loaded with leadoff hitter Francisco Lindor up in a 3-2 count and two outs, with the Yankees leading 5-2. Headrick threw a few warm-up pitches during the delay and needed just one pitch to retire Lindor on a line drive back at the lefty reliever.
Before the game, the Yankees honored victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and had several members of the 2001 Yankees, including Derek Jeter, on hand for pregame ceremonies.
The current war in Gaza was sparked by the Oct. 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel, which was led by the Palestinian-armed group Hamas and resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,200 people. More than 70,000 Palestinians have since been killed in the conflict, Gaza’s health ministry said in April. It has been more than 10 months since the Trump administration helped broker a truce in Gaza, but health officials there say more than 1,300 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the cease-fire.
