Charlotte lands Women’s Tennis Association Finals and global headquarters in a 3-year deal starting in 2027
CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Charlotte will host the Women’s Tennis Association Finals for three years beginning in 2027, while also becoming the home of the WTA’s global headquarters, according to an announcement from Gov. Josh Stein.
The state is providing a $14.4 million grant through North Carolina’s Major Events, Games and Attractions Fund to help bring the event to Charlotte.
The 2027 WTA Finals are scheduled for Nov. 10-14 at Spectrum Center and will feature the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams in the world.
The tournament is expected to draw about 80,000 spectators to Charlotte. Plans also call for practice courts, fan experiences and meeting spaces at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Charlotte will host the WTA Finals in 2027, 2028 and 2029. The city is also expected to host a future WTA 500 event after 2029.
“North Carolina is proud to welcome the WTA headquarters and the WTA Finals to Charlotte,” Stein said. “This premier international organization and event will bring visitors to our state, support local businesses, and allow North Carolina to showcase all that we have to offer to a global audience.”
N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said bringing the event to Charlotte reflects the state’s sports and tourism industries.
The state said the tournament could have an economic impact of tens of millions of dollars on the region.
The WTA announcement comes as North Carolina highlights its efforts to attract major sporting events. The state said it has welcomed eight major events this year, including events in golf, motorsports and pickleball.
The MEGA Fund has awarded $39.8 million in grants to support events across North Carolina, according to the announcement.
