JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – Our Jackson Home and the City of Jackson invited the public to the Foundry Event Center for an unveiling of a new large-scale sculpture from Memphis-based artist Suzy Hendrix.
About the project
Lizzie Emmons, program director for Our Jackson Home tells us, “I’d say probably about a ear and a half ago, we started talking about this being a new entry point to the Farmers’ Market. There’s this public parking lot that rarely gets used to go to the Farmers’ Market because there hasn’t been a sidewalk there.”
The new archway has been called ‘Gateway Bouquet.’ It was designed to create a welcoming landmark to those arriving downtown from Highland Avenue.
The sculpture was commissioned by the City of Jackson’s Public Art Commission, Our Jackson Home, Jackson Downtown Development Corp., and Jackson Downtown Revenue Finance Corp. Partners on the project were JG Fabrication, MSB Construction, and A2H Engineers.

“All the different colors, to me, represent diversity, but also I feel like they compliment one another, and not only that, the colors, in I call them blossoms, also represent the produce at the Farmers’ Market in the colors and so forth, and I feel like it’s a healthy suggestion,” artist Suzy Hendrix tells us.
After the reveal, Hendrix also exhibited a special art gallery at Havner’s Frame Shop.
Hendrix spoke on the art exhibit as well, “It was kind of a last minute exhibition. It was just a last minute decision of ‘Oh it would be nice to have an exhibition coincide with this reveal today,’ and it’s all different kinds of stained glass that I like to juxtapose upon one another as a play of light between glass, reflected light, transmitted light and so forth.”
During the exhibit, a light lunch was served. The show was called ‘Illuminate’ and featured over 20 more of Hendrix’s works.
