EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) — Police have identified the 15-year-old girl killed after being struck by a truck while on a bike in the East Village as Daria Serkov.
A 16-year-old girl was also injured in the crash and remains hospitalized. She was last listed in stable condition, according to police.
It happened at East 14th Street and 1st Avenue around 9 p.m. Friday. Police say the truck was traveling westbound on 14th Street when the driver attempted to make a right turn onto 1st Avenue, striking the teens.
“Oh man, I was crying, I was praying for the girl. It was, oh my God. I never seen anything like this,” said Terrence Moss.
The e-bike was crushed under the truck’s wheels.
Serkov and the 16-year-old girl were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where Serkov was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
The impact was so strong it knocked the shoes off at least one of the victims. A shoe and the crushed Citi Bike were found underneath the truck as police investigated the cause of the crash.
The truck appeared to be a Hydro excavation truck, according to the services Badger Daylighting provides.
Police believe both victims may have been riding on the bike that was later on the ground in the crosswalk.
The 57-year-old driver of the commercial truck stopped and cooperated from police, according to surveillance video.
There is no designated bike lane along 14th Street — it has a busway and limited vehicular traffic that cyclists have to navigate. On Saturday morning. police could be seen ticketing cyclists running red lights.
People at the busy intersection say they can see how the driver of a tall truck would not be able to see a bike on its right side.
“A car, they can see the people on the bike, but they (trucks) can’t see nobody,” Moss said
“A lot of people don’t know things unless they’re experienced, but at least in the city, we have the experience of seeing these things happen, unfortunately. So maybe we should have signage on the trucks so that we can obviously cut down those losses and unfortunate events like this to happen in the future,” added Matt Bido, who takes the bus along 14th Street.
CitiBike users need to be at least 16, which the bike operator was.
But CitiBike’s safety rules in their user agreement also state that only one person can be on a bike at a time.
CitiBike is run by Lyft which has issued a statement saying it’ll help law enforcement with the investigation and is expressing condolences to the victim’s family.
