PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Phoenix-based outreach organization is partnering with a mobile medical clinic to bring health services directly to neighborhoods across the city, including HIV testing and health education.
As Phoenix experiences another record-breaking summer, advocates said getting to a doctor’s office can be a barrier for anyone without stable housing, reliable transportation, or air conditioning.
A gap in access
Spectrum Medical Care Center’s mobile outreach clinic was built to address that gap. The mobile unit delivers HIV testing, PrEP consultations and sexual health education straight to Phoenix neighborhoods, community gatherings and heat relief sites. Rather than requiring underserved groups to travel through extreme heat, the clinic comes directly to them.
For over a year, We Feed the People With Love has traveled across Phoenix delivering hot meals, cold water, fentanyl test strips and, if needed, Narcan.
The organization is now partnering with Spectrum Medical Care Center’s mobile outreach clinic to expand its outreach.
‘We feed the people with love’
Charisma Meadows, founder of We Feed the People With Love, said people experiencing homelessness are often overlooked.
“With me working in the behavioral health field myself, I see it every day. People get looked over just because they’re sleeping at the bus stop or because they may be looking like they did expose their self to substance use. But us, we feed the people with love. We just feed the people with love. There’s no requirements. There’s no questions asked. We just want to meet people where they are,” Meadows said.
Meadows said the need does not stop, because people are hungry every day.
