The Detroit Red Wings added depth to their roster Friday, signing veteran defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year deal worth roughly $1 million.

Hamonic, who has appeared in 900 NHL games since the 2010-11 season, skated in 59 games last season with the Ottawa Senators, recording seven points, 72 shots, 92 blocks and 73 hits in an average of 17:04 on the ice.

He was also a key member of the Senators’ team that reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.

The move marks another key signing for the Red Wings ahead of training camp, which begins in September. This offseason, general manager Steve Yzerman also reached deals with defensemen Jacob Bernard-Docker and Ian Mitchell.

In addition to the Senators, Hamonic has played for the New York Islanders — who selected him with the 53rd overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft — as well as the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. Along the way, he has tallied 242 points and 774 penalty minutes.

In 2016-17, the NHL awarded Hamonic the league’s Foundation Player Award — an annual honor given “to the player who applies the core values of hockey — commitment, perseverance and teamwork — to enrich the lives of people in his community.”
