MINEOLA, Texas (KLTV) – Most art museums frown upon the idea of taking the artwork home with you, but in Mineola — it’s encouraged!
Henry’s Treasure Trove is packed with antiques, but the walls are lined with works by artists from Van Gogh to Picasso.
An art collection spanning across centuries, countries and continents — lines the walls.
“I have friends saying I should be in the stock market making my money,” Royce Freeborne, art collector and owner of Henry’s Treasure Trove said. “I love art. So I’m going to continue down my path unless God nudges me a different way.”
Freeborne owns the historic Henry Hotel and he’s made it into an antique store, filling a large part of it with a collection rivaling museums.
From Vincent Van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali — and even Picasso — the proof is signed in the corner.
“I like art. I got to collecting it when I had like 50,000 baseball cards,’ Freeborne said.
For his career in healthcare, Freeborne traveled from Mexico, Canada and to all fifty states — each trip leading to a chance to shop for art.
Eventually, he owned several nursing homes across Texas and put his eye for art to use.
“We bought artwork for the nursing homes instead of paying $10 for a Walmart piece of paper,’ Freeborne said. ”It breaks up the hallways from being a monotonous, terrible thing. Whether it was recognized or not, didn’t matter to me, residents loved it. It’s real art!”
He found pieces at local markets and art warehouses along the way.
And since this art has traveled across oceans and generations… you may be wondering….
Why is it here in Mineola?
“Because I moved here,” Freeborne said. “I love the place, bought my first nursing home here on Highway 80. Come on! What’s wrong with this town? It’s a town of 5,000 people that should be 35,000 with what we have to offer.”
So, it may not be New York City… but no Met, no problem.
“It’s right here in Mineola, folks!” Freeborne said.
This is a museum containing art you can explore and possibly take home with you.
Now while there is prestigious art from some of the greats, Henry’s Treasure Trove also hosts several local artists at more affordable price points.
Freeborne said his artwork can be verified through authenticity paperwork and if you have any questions regarding a piece to just ask.
