Missing Claude Chana statue returns to Placer County after decades

Ron EdensCOLFAX, Calif. —

A historic statue of Gold Rush pioneer Claude Chana has been returned to Placer County after being missing for decades.

The statue, created by Dr. Kenneth Fox in the 1960s, originally stood in front of the historic Colfax Hotel. It also served as a model for the larger monument located in Old Town Auburn.

Decades ago, the statue went missing. Earlier this month, someone spotted it for sale on Facebook and contacted the mayor, who then reached out to the owner of the Colfax Hotel. Today, the statue was successfully shipped back to its original location.

The owners of the Colfax Hotel are currently working to restore the building in hopes of returning it to full service.
