Library card unlocks thermal detectors, scanners and more in Cumberland County

CAMP HILL, Pa. —

September being National Library Card Sign-Up Month is a reminder that a library card can open the door to more than books.

At the Cleve J. Fredrickson Library in Camp Hill, patrons can still check out novels, audiobooks and CDs — but they can also borrow “adult kits” designed to help with everyday tasks and hobbies.

The collection includes items such as a thermal leak detector, a scanner, and cables for converting old VHS tapes or DVDs into digital format.

“This is a thermal leak detector, which was very useful,” said Jessica Miller, the director of the Cleve J. Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill. “If you have some documents and you need to scan them, you can borrow this from the library, get your stuff scanned, bring it back. If you have a VCR or an old DVD player and you want to convert it into a digital format, you can use the cables and get it plugged in.”

How the collection grew

Library staff said the idea grew out of earlier outdoor kits, including parks and forests kits, with support from AARP. They said the response showed patrons wanted to borrow useful items, not just books.

“They are purchased once, but each time this kit is returned, it can go home with another person or family,” Miller said. “It’s been very popular. When I was trying to find some items for this particular meeting, I noticed most of our stuff is out right now, so that makes it a little difficult. But we do still have a lovely selection of things.”

Libraries stay relevant

Library officials said they continue to adapt to community needs and remain relevant as families look for ways to save money and try new hobbies without buying new items.

“I love our community,” Miller said. “Having them be able to come in and get what they need — and whatever they’re interested in, we can help them find information about it. Whatever their needs are, we can help point them in the right direction. And seeing the relief and the smiles on their faces… is really my best reward.”

How to get a library card

If you’re a Pennsylvania resident, library cards are free.

You can sign up for a library card online or in person through the Cumberland County Libraries Registration Portal.

You do need:

– A valid photo ID (driver’s license or state-issued ID with your current address)

– Two documents proving your identity and current address if your ID doesn’t reflect your current location.

Camp Hill School District students can also sign up with their school information.
