Brandel Chamblee has dismissed the idea of Scottie Scheffler going on and surpassing the achievements of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, as he provided his own answer to the debate over the greatest of all time.

Scheffler is unquestionably the best player in the world right now. There has been no one who has been more dominant since Woods was at the top of the game. The 30-year-old has won four majors since The Masters in 2022, while he is only a US Open victory away from completing the Career Grand Slam.

Scheffler has also won more than 20 times on the PGA Tour, which is remarkable when you consider that he was a slightly contentious pick for the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Inevitably, the question then becomes just how many majors will Scheffler end up with in his career? He is 11 adrift of Tiger Woods, while Jack Nicklaus is 14 ahead of his countryman.

Brandel Chamblee says whether Scottie Scheffler can catch Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods

We are certainly witnessing something special right now. However, when asked on the We Need a Fourth Podcast whether Scheffler could surpass Nicklaus and Woods, Brandel Chamblee admitted to having his doubts.

“No. Jack got an early start. Tiger got an early start. If Scottie won double digit major championships, the game is so much more competitive now, I almost look at winning double digit major championships as analogous to somebody batting .400 in baseball,” he said.

“It’s never going to happen in baseball. And Tiger did it, but Tiger Woods was a guy who could bat .400 in baseball. Tiger was as good a putter as he was good at everything else, and he had an insatiable desire to compete. Those things are unassailable.”

Brandel Chamblee is asked whether Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods is the greatest of all time

There is perhaps no topic in the game that has been more widely debated than whether Nicklaus or Woods is the best player to have ever lived.

Nicklaus has the edge when it comes to major wins and longevity. However, Woods’ case is helped by the fact that so many more of his shots were filmed. There also seemed to be greater depth on tour when Woods was playing.

So perhaps it is no surprise that Chamblee could not quite provide a satisfactory answer when asked who the greatest is.

“There’s two different questions. Is it the greatest major champion of all time, or who’s played the greatest golf of all time? Those are two different questions,” he said.

“Jack Nicklaus is the greatest major champion of all time. Jack Nicklaus had the greatest career of all time. The greatest golf that’s ever been played was played from ’99 to 2002, or ’98 to 2002, and that was Tiger Woods. So, Jack and Tiger are neck and neck GOATs. Those two are tied.”

One day there will probably be technology that is advanced enough to provide a definitive answer. Unfortunately for now, we simply have to accept that there is probably no incorrect view.
