LAUREL — Going into his senior year at Meridian High School, Logan Jacoby said he is focused on his friends. After all, for many of them, it could be their final year together.
If asked to have his friends describe him, Jacoby said he thinks they would say he’s fun to be around, typically happy and overall curious.
“Curious is probably the big one,” he said.
He said he also considers himself pretty bold, at least with his friends. He’s not scared to hold back or jump into a deep conversation when needed.
While spending time with his friends, Jacoby also plans on spending a lot of time on the golf course as he takes up the helm as golf captain this year, following the graduation of his friend Matthew Blankenburg.
Initially, Jacoby played baseball in the spring, but he quit his freshman year. Not long after, Blankenburg convinced Jacoby to come out for the high school golf team.
Jacoby said he has grown up playing golf with his grandpa for nearly as long as he can remember. The summer before his sophomore year, while out with his grandpa, he said he kept thinking about joining the team. So, he decided to give it a shot.
“Ever since then, it’s been something I’ve been in love with,” Jacoby said.
He said he is always trying to try different shots and figure out what works best in each scenario.
“I like the challenge it brings to me,” he said. “It kind of feels like a puzzle.”
Jacoby’s favorite course is North Bellingham, which works out well considering it is also Meridian’s home course.
While he loves golf, he said he doesn’t plan on attempting to play at the collegiate level. He said he thinks he could probably hang with the other golfers, but it would suck the fun out of the game he loves. Instead, he plans on attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and participating in the PGA Golf Management Program. Here, he is able to continue with his love of golf, make new connections, find new friends and learn about the industry. By the end, he will have a degree in hospitality management.
“That gets me prepared,” he said.
Prepared for what? The dream of running his own course. While it’s the dream now, he said he could never even have imagined the option a few years ago.
“It’s not something I ever thought I would see myself saying,” Jacoby said.
When it comes to school, he said he doesn’t think he stands out, but he does have a good relationship with several staff members, especially Assistant Principal Rob Zabel.
“I think I’m just another student in the pack,” he said.
While being “just another student”, Jacoby joked his senior year he is “becoming an art major,” as he has four art classes for the year. He said he is most excited for pottery and enjoys being taught by art teacher Mike Holz.
“He makes it fun. He’s fun to be around,” Jacoby said.
He added that, like with golf, he likes the challenge he will get from pottery. While he might complain about the challenge, he said he promises he enjoys it.
