As Australia modernizes healthcare and imaging, pulmonary diagnostics is becoming more accurate, expanding safer imaging options and improving outcomes for conditions such as chronic lung disease. Consequently, the country’s computed tomography (CT) systems market is expected to expand at 3% annually through 2035, forecasts GlobalData, an intelligence and productivity platform.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Computed Tomography (CT) Systems Market Size by Segments, Share, Regulatory, Reimbursement, Installed Base and Forecast to 2036,” reveals that Australia accounted for 4% of the Asia-Pacific CT systems market last year. This share is set to increase further as healthcare providers upgrade existing healthcare frameworks and adopt more sophisticated imaging technologies to support lung assessment.

In a related development, 4DMedical received regulatory approval in Australia earlier this year for CT-VQ, its non-contrast ventilation–perfusion (V/Q) imaging solution, which enables clinicians to assess regional lung function without the use of contrast agents, radiotracers, or use of nuclear medicine-specific infrastructure—the standard for ventilation-perfusion imaging. The CT-VQ system will provide ventilation and perfusion imaging data generated directly from routine, non-contrast chest CT scans.

“This regulatory milestone is significant because it allows Australian clinicians to use a non-contrast method to evaluate ventilation and perfusion, which can be especially valuable for patients who may not be suitable for contrast-based imaging,” GlobalData Medical Devices Analyst Priyanka Chakraborty said. “It also has the potential to broaden the clinical utility of advanced functional lung imaging in day-to-day respiratory care.”

The approval supports broader adoption of 4DMedical’s non-invasive imaging technology, providing hospitals and radiology providers with a lower-risk respiratory diagnostic option that streamlines workflow and delivers functional lung insights with greater patient comfort and fewer contrast-related limitations. The launch is expected to support safer, more efficient diagnosis, earlier detection, and improved patient monitoring.

“By introducing CT-based functional lung imaging that produces ventilation/perfusion maps without contrast agents or radiotracers to Australia, 4DMedical is enabling a more accessible, patient-centric pathway for lung disease diagnosis,” Chakraborty stated. “If the technology continues to scale and integrate with broader digital and AI-driven workflows, Australia is well positioned to expand its regional impact, supported by established infrastructure, clinical adoption, and a platform for future pipeline developments and investment.”
