YANKTON — For the first time since 2020, the Mitchell High School boys golf team left Fox Run Golf Course without the Marchand Cup in its possession.

Instead, Yankton won 13 matches outright and retained the cup with a 17-7 victory over the Kernels on Thursday at Fox Run.

Mitchell had won four Marchand Cup meetings in a row from 2021-24, including two wins at Fox Run, before the Bucks won at Lakeview in 2025. The Kernels still lead the all-time series, which began in 2015, 7-5.

The Ryder Cup-style event featured three different match formats. Four-ball best-ball matches were played for the first six holes; holes 7-12 were a two-player scramble; and holes 13-18 were individual match play. The tournament is named in memory of Yankton High School graduate and former Mitchell golf coach Rob Marchand, who died in 2014.

Ian Weber and Parker Rauscher grabbed a point for MHS in the four-ball best-ball matches, winning 2-and-1 against Easton Schelhaas and Max Dobler. Yankton won two matches, and the other three were all square after six holes.

The Bucks separated themselves in the two-player scramble, winning five of the six matchups. Asher Dannenbring and Jordan Meyerink were all square with Eli Larson and Kai Cody, earning Mitchell’s lone half-point. Yankton led 9-3 entering individual match play.

Rauscher and Griffin Lyle picked up match play victories for the Kernels. Rauscher defeated Dobler, 2-and-1, ending as the team leader in scoring with 2.5 points. Meanwhile, Gillen defeated Conner Mitzel, 3-and-1. Dannenbring, Meyerink, Eli Konrad and Penn Long were all square in their pairings. Yankton won six matches and had an 8-4 edge in match play format scoring.

Triple winners for the Bucks were Gus Sprakel, Ethan Rippe and Max Weisenburger. Rippe and Weisenburger were partners for the first two competitions.

The Class AA boys golf championship meet is set for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6, at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
