SAN ANTONIO – Southwest High School’s new Dragons baseball coach, Nick Mendez, is bringing more than 25 years of coaching experience to a role he says is about more than wins and losses.
Mendez is featured in the KSAT 12 sports team’s Hispanic Heritage Month series in a two-part sit-down with Mary Rominger, streaming on KSAT Sports Now.
The conversation focuses on Mendez’s career, the players he has mentored and the life experiences that guide how he leads young athletes.
During the interview, Mendez reacts to heartfelt Facebook messages from former players, offering a look at the long-term impact coaches can have beyond the field.
He also discusses why he stepped away from coaching for four years to focus on fatherhood, a decision that shaped his perspective when he returned to the game.
Now at Southwest, Mendez said his own struggles influence how he treats his athletes and how he approaches mentorship. With decades in coaching, he is working to help the next generation of Dragons grow as players and people.
