A bear cub has been spotted wandering around Shelbyville, prompting officials to issue a warning to residents.

The cub was spotted near 8th and Washington streets, according to Shelby County Emergency Services.

Officials are urging residents to keep their distance and call 911 if they see it.

Shelbyville Police Chief Bruce Gentry said calling 911 allows officers to monitor the cub’s movements and contact Kentucky Fish and Wildlife for guidance.

Officials are asking residents to not approach, feed, capture or attempt to rescue the cub.

Gentry said officers will respond to sightings and monitor the situation to determine the best course of action for the safety of the public and the animal.
