Only at the start of the second set did the Swiss player (WTA 67) have a brief opportunity, when she earned three break points in a row in the first game. But the Wimbledon champion turned the tide by winning five points in a row.
This means that Switzerland’s hopes at the tournament in China’s capital now rest on Belinda Bencic, who will face American Ann Li (WTA No. 30) in the round of 32.
Aryna Sabalenka, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, was eliminated in the third round. The Belarusian lost to Czech top-40 player Nikola Bartunkova 4-6, 3-6. The world No. 1, Yelena Rybakina, had already been eliminated from the draw on Saturday.
